Marks & Spencer is converting 12 former Homebase stores into foodhalls after the DIY retailer collapsed into administration. Homebase owed 803 million pounds and reported losses exceeding 59 million pounds, resulting in 2,300 job losses. Teneo Financial Advisory administrators cited high inflation, interest rates, shipping delays, and poor weather as the primary causes of the failure.
While 70 stores and the company's intellectual property were sold to CDS (Superstores International) Limited—owned by Chris Dawson and trading as The Range and Wilko—for 25.6 million pounds, Marks & Spencer acquired a separate set of sites.
New foodhalls have already opened in Abingdon and Godalming, with the latter believed to be the largest in the United Kingdom at 22,000 square feet. A 16,000 square foot branch is scheduled to open in Northampton's Riverside Retail Park on October 21. Other acquired sites include locations in Cannock and Farnham.
