Pete Fry Sworn In as Vancouver's First Green Mayor
Pete Fry became Vancouver's first Green Party mayor on November 3, leading a fragmented city council with no single-party majority.
Pete Fry was sworn in as the mayor of Vancouver on November 3, 2026, becoming the first member of the Green Party to hold the office. During his inauguration ceremony at the Orpheum Theatre, Fry called for cooperation and community belonging, stating that disagreement should not lead to division and that listening is as valuable as speaking.
Fry took office after defeating incumbent mayor Ken Sim in the October 17 election. The new city council is composed of 10 councillors and lacks a single-party majority. The Green Party holds five seats, while COPE holds four. OneCity and ABC Vancouver each hold one seat. This progressive alignment resulted from coordinated candidacies between the Greens, COPE, and OneCity to prevent splitting the vote.
Following the mayoral ceremony, the new council is scheduled to hold its first public meeting at Vancouver City Hall to approve statutory positions. This includes the appointment of Sean Orr as the first deputy mayor of the term. Separate ceremonies were also held on November 3 to swear in new school board trustees and park board commissioners.
