AI Taskforce Urges UK to Secure Datacentre Public Consent

The Sovereign AI Leadership taskforce warns the UK government it has 12 months to establish a community benefit framework to prevent organized opposition to datacentres.

The Sovereign AI Leadership (SAIL) taskforce, which includes Nvidia, Microsoft, and Cisco, has warned the UK government that it has approximately 12 months to secure public consent for datacentre construction. The group cautions that without a clear framework, the UK could face organized opposition similar to protests seen in the United States.

To mitigate this risk, the taskforce is urging the Labour government to establish a prosperity compact. This framework would provide concrete local benefits, such as allowing councils to retain more tax revenues, to offset public concerns regarding environmental impact and rising energy costs. Microsoft has already pledged $30bn for UK AI infrastructure and has invested in facilities in London and Newport.

Opposition is already mounting, with campaign groups like PauseAI UK and Action to Protect Rural Scotland describing the developments as environmentally destructive. In Scotland, 15 community campaigns are actively opposing hyperscale datacentres. A government spokesperson responded that datacentres must prioritize clean power and local investment, noting that some local authorities in English AI growth zones can already retain additional business rates.
