Nigerian House Urges National Drone Industrialisation Policy

The House of Representatives urged the Federal Government of Nigeria on Wednesday to adopt a National Drone Industrialisation Policy to strengthen the country's defense manufacturing capabilities. The move follows a motion sponsored by Ademorin Kuye, responding to security threats from banditry and terrorist groups such as Boko Haram and ISWAP, which are currently utilizing commercial drones.

Lawmakers called for the provision of structured capital support for verified indigenous manufacturers, including the Nigerian Air Force Institute of Technology, Beirech UAS, Terra Industries, Elites Group, and Pro-force. This funding is to be facilitated through the Bank of Industry and the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria.

To implement this vision, the House mandated several joint committees to establish dedicated Defence Industrial Zones, negotiate international technology transfer agreements, and create a strategic roadmap. Additionally, committees will review aviation and defense procurement legislation to secure tax exemptions and protect intellectual property. The committees are required to report their findings and progress within four weeks.
