Volkswagen Recalls 22,524 ID.4 EVs Over Battery Fire Risk

Volkswagen is recalling over 22,000 ID.4 electric crossovers in the United States due to a battery defect that may cause vehicle fires.

Volkswagen is recalling approximately 22,524 ID.4 electric compact crossovers produced between January 1, 2023, and February 1, 2025. The recall follows 23 claims in the United States between January 2024 and August 2026 involving battery defects that could lead to fires.

The automaker stated the root cause of the defect remains unknown. However, the company found that specific charging profiles combined with a state of charge exceeding 80% may trigger thermal propagation within the high-voltage battery. Until a permanent remedy is implemented, the company advised owners to "limit vehicle charging to 80%."

Vehicle identification numbers became searchable on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website on October 6, and affected owners will receive notification letters starting November 27. Because the vehicles remain under the new vehicle limited warranty period, the company is not offering a separate reimbursement plan.
