Quant Funds Gain While Situational Awareness Collapses 67 Percent

Quantitative hedge funds outperformed human-run peers in July 2026, while Leopold Aschenbrenner's Situational Awareness fund collapsed, allowing Citadel to acquire its portfolio.

Quantitative hedge funds saw strong growth in July 2026 as algorithm-driven strategies outperformed human-run and multistrategy competitors. Renaissance Technologies' Renaissance Institutional Equities fund rose 9.2%, and Graham Capital Management's Tactical Trend strategy gained 1.8%, bringing its yearly return to 23.7%. Other quantitative firms, including Two Sigma Investments and Capital Fund Management, also reported gains.

In contrast, Citadel LLC capitalized on the collapse of the $45 billion tech fund Situational Awareness. Led by Leopold Aschenbrenner, Situational Awareness suffered a 67% loss in July, forcing the fund to sell off its public equity holdings. Citadel purchased the portfolio during this volatility, contributing to a record-setting 14.2% gain in its equities fund for the month.
