Crypto Groups Spend $176 Million in Midterm Election Setbacks

Cryptocurrency-backed political groups spent $176 million in the 2026 midterms but failed to secure a friendly Congress or defeat Senator Sherrod Brown.

Fairshake, a political action committee backed by Coinbase and XRP Ledger, spent approximately $176 million across more than 100 congressional races during the 2026 US midterm elections. The investment aimed to secure the passage of the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act (CLARITY Act), which seeks to define the regulatory boundaries between the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

Despite the spending, the industry faced significant setbacks as Democrats gained control of Congress. In Ohio, Senator Sherrod Brown won re-election despite a $63 million campaign effort funded by crypto-backed groups to defeat him. Brown has remained a consistent critic of the industry's regulatory goals.

The CLARITY Act previously failed a procedural vote in the Senate in September. While the GENIUS Act established a stablecoin framework in 2025, the shift in congressional leadership means the future of the CLARITY Act now depends on bipartisan negotiations concerning financial oversight and investor protection.
