Pick n Pay Ends Restructuring Process After Union Agreement

Pick n Pay withdrew a restructuring process affecting 22,000 employees after reaching an agreement with the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union.

Retailer Pick n Pay withdrew a section 189A restructuring consultation process on Thursday after reaching an agreement with the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union (Saccawu). The process, initiated in May, affected approximately 22,000 store-based employees and focused on reducing salaries and benefits to lower operating costs rather than implementing mass retrenchments.

The resolution follows intense negotiations and an intervention by the Minister of Employment and Labour. The process also involved a Labour Court ruling by Judge Edwin Tlhotlhalemaje, who determined that Saccawu's application for urgent relief was premature because the union had not proven imminent harm.

Financially, the company expects its first-half headline loss per share for the period ending August 30 to be between 38.85c and 44.83c. This represents a 25% to 35% improvement over the previous year, driven by increased trading profit at the Boxer discount chain and reduced losses in the core Pick n Pay segment. The retailer plans to provide more details on the union agreement during its results publication on October 26, 2026.

As part of its broader turnaround strategy, the company has appointed Spencer Sonn as the next CEO. Sonn is scheduled to succeed Sean Summers on February 1, 2027.
