Latvian Voters Elect New Saeima Amid Ukraine Aid Debate

Latvian voters cast ballots for 100 parliamentary seats as candidates clash over defense spending and continued military support for Ukraine.

Voters in Latvia head to the polls on Saturday to elect 100 members of the Saeima for four-year terms. The election occurs against a backdrop of heightened security concerns following airspace incursions and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Andris Kulbergs, the Prime Minister and leader of the centrist United List, currently leads opinion polls with approximately 14% of the vote. Kulbergs has campaigned on a platform of maintaining defense spending at 5% of GDP and expanding anti-drone capabilities to secure the nation. He argues that Latvia must provide Ukraine with all necessary resources to ensure a victory.

Opposing this stance is Julia Stepanenko, leader of the pro-Russian Sovereign Power party. Stepanenko advocates for ending financial and military aid to Ukraine to prioritize domestic cost-of-living issues and pursue peace talks. She claims that voters are exhausted by air alerts and the search for shelters, arguing that the war should not be encouraged through financing.

Political fragmentation is expected to complicate the formation of a new government. Kulbergs may be forced to negotiate coalition agreements with other groups, including the populist Latvia First party led by Ainars Slesers.
