India Scales AI Infrastructure Toward 200,000 GPU Target

India is aggressively expanding its artificial intelligence infrastructure to secure a position as a global services powerhouse and leading AI adopter. Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Union IT Minister, stated that the nation must scale its computing capacity to approximately 200,000 GPUs to remain competitive. Under the IndiaAI Mission, the government has already secured 38,000 GPUs and is adding another 20,000. To sustain this growth, the government has granted tax breaks for data centers through 2047.

In the private sector, Yotta Data Services is planning a $2 billion AI hub in Mumbai powered by NVIDIA Corp chips. The company, which currently controls 60% to 70% of India's installed GPU capacity, intends to raise $1.2 billion to $1.5 billion in a pre-IPO deal before going public within a year.

During the IMC Bharat Calling Conference 2026 in Mumbai, Ashish Kumar Chauhan, MD and CEO of the National Stock Exchange, asserted that India is leveraging semiconductors, robotics, and biotech to replicate the success of its previous IT revolution. He attributed this potential to the country's young population and strengthened bilateral ties with the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe.
