European Union Joins U.S.-Led Operation Economic Outcast Against Iran

The European Union joined a United States-led financial campaign to isolate Iran from international financial networks and sever its economic lifelines.

The European Union has officially joined Operation Economic Outcast, a financial campaign led by the United States to isolate Iran from international financial networks. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the partnership, stating the operation aims to prevent the Iranian government from using the global financial system to fund its nuclear ambitions, weapons programs, and terror proxies.

The EU's decision to join the campaign follows concerns regarding Iran's ballistic missile programs, regional destabilization, and military support for Russia's war in Ukraine. While the EU is prepared to implement further economic measures, it maintains that diplomacy and de-escalation remain essential for a peace settlement and the security of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

The United States Department of the Treasury has already mapped networks used by Iran to bypass sanctions and expanded its scrutiny to include shipping, technology, and digital assets. Bessent framed the operation as a choice for Iran between complete global isolation or a return to normalcy through negotiations.
