OpenAI Tests Image Watermarking for ChatGPT Free Users

OpenAI is testing a watermarking system for AI-generated images within the ChatGPT Android beta app. Discoveries in the beta code and interface reveal a tag labeled image-gen-watermark-for-free and a Save without watermark toggle in the image preview menu.

Early reports indicate the feature targets users on the free tier. While some initial testers on free accounts were able to bypass the watermark, the final implementation is expected to restrict watermark removal to paying subscribers. This strategy appears designed to incentivize users to upgrade their accounts to paid versions.

OpenAI has not officially confirmed the feature. The development comes as the industry faces increasing pressure regarding AI authenticity, transparency, and the spread of misinformation. If fully deployed, the system would distinguish OpenAI from other major AI image generators that do not currently watermark their outputs.
