Research from Bankrate indicates that Americans overpay for mortgages by $65 billion annually. The typical borrower spends an additional $3,343 per year because they fail to shop for the lowest available rates among different lenders.
Financial experts recommend that borrowers obtain at least three written loan estimates to accurately compare rates, fees, and credits. Successful homeowners have utilized various strategies to secure better terms, such as applying to multiple lenders to secure a 5.25% rate or leveraging builder incentives to obtain a 5.375% rate along with closing cost credits and appliances.
Eric Bernstein of LendFriend Mortgage advises that refinancing typically becomes viable when a borrower can lower their interest rate by at least 1% without paying points. Other strategies include no-cost refinancing to reduce interest payments without incurring new closing fees.
