AI Investment Cycle Drives S&P 500 Concentration Risk
Financial analysts warn that AI-driven investment cycles have concentrated over 40% of S&P 500 index fund allocations into just 10 companies.
Financial analysts and asset management firms are warning of significant concentration risk in equity portfolios caused by the current artificial intelligence investment cycle. Data from RBC Wealth Management indicates that more than 40% of investments in market-cap-weighted S&P 500 index funds are now allocated to only 10 companies, with Nvidia Inc. alone accounting for nearly 8% of the index.
S&P Dow Jones Indices suggests that shifting to equal weighting can reduce exposure to these dominant firms and notes that this strategy has historically outperformed during periods of high concentration. However, some experts argue that equal weighting fails to address thematic concentration, as these portfolios remain tied to the same macroeconomic and AI-driven capital expenditure cycles.
To achieve true diversification, analysts from firms including JP Morgan Asset Management and Apollo Global Management suggest looking beyond public equities. They recommend incorporating real assets, such as farmland, which operate on different return drivers like commodity prices and global food demand rather than technology cycles.
