UK Government Consults on Restructuring Essex Local Government

The Government of the United Kingdom is conducting a public consultation through January 11, 2026, to restructure local government in Greater Essex as part of the Devolution Priority Programme. The process follows the submission of four different proposals on September 26 that aim to replace the current 15-council two-tier system with between three and five new unitary authorities.

One prominent model, titled "Three new councils, one bright future," is supported by Essex County Council, Braintree District Council, and Epping Forest District Council. This specific plan proposes three unitary councils and claims potential savings of over £400 million over 10 years compared to a five-unitary structure. Local leaders, including representatives from Colchester City Council, have voiced support for the reorganization to strengthen service delivery.

Residents, businesses, and voluntary groups are urged to provide feedback before the midnight deadline on January 11. The Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government will review the consultation results and is expected to announce a final decision on the organizational model in the spring of 2026.
