Democrats Pivot to Economic Populism in 2026 Elections
Democratic candidates shifted focus from immigration to economic populism during the 2026 general election, contributing to key victories including the Texas governorship.
Democratic candidates significantly reduced their focus on immigration during the 2026 general election to avoid culture wars and appeal to Hispanic, independent, and rural voters. Spending data shows immigration-themed advertising dropped from third place in the primaries to 35th place in the general election, as candidates instead prioritized the cost of living and economic populism.
This strategic shift coincided with the election of Gina Hinojosa as the Governor of Texas. Hinojosa identifies her political approach as economic populism, arguing that working Texans are often pitted against tech giants. While immigration remained a primary strength for Republicans, some reports indicate that voters punished the GOP over high costs and mass deportation policies.
Following the results, the American Immigration Lawyers Association and the American Business Immigration Coalition called for the new Congress to build a modern immigration system. Meanwhile, some GOP reformers have begun emphasizing the economic benefits of immigration enforcement, and Representative José María Salazar assembled a pro-migration caucus within the Republican party.
