Waymo Expands Autonomous Ride-Hailing Across California
Waymo received regulatory approval to expand its driverless ride-hailing service across major metropolitan regions in Northern and Southern California.
Waymo announced a major expansion of its autonomous ride-hailing service across the San Francisco Bay Area and other California metropolitan regions. The company received authorization from the California Public Utilities Commission to charge for driverless rides after submitting a Passenger Safety Plan.
The California Department of Motor Vehicles expanded the company's approved operating range to include Sacramento and Yolo counties, as well as Alameda, Contra Costa, Napa, Marin, Sonoma, and Solano counties in Northern California. In Southern California, the approved range now extends to Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, and Ventura counties.
Despite these regulatory clearances, the company must still establish the physical and digital infrastructure required for deployment. While a rollout to the East Bay may occur in the coming months, a broader expansion is expected within the next year. Rebecca Long of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission noted that while autonomous vehicles offer accessibility for seniors and people with disabilities, cities are not currently designed to accommodate them.
