Andrei Gyurov Challenges Iliana Yotova to Presidential Debate
Presidential candidate Andrei Gyurov challenged incumbent Iliana Yotova to a public debate after conflicting polls followed the first round of Bulgaria's 2026 elections.
Presidential candidate Andrei Gyurov, a former caretaker prime minister backed by pro-Western opposition parties, challenged incumbent President Iliana Yotova to a public television debate following the first round of Bulgaria's 2026 presidential elections on October 25.
The candidates are now competing for a second-round runoff scheduled for November 1. Initial results from the first round were contradictory; Market Links reported Gyurov leading with 33.5% against Yotova's 32.7%, while Alpha Research placed Yotova ahead with 34.6% to Gyurov's 32.7%.
Yotova, who assumed the presidency in January 2026 with support from the Progressive Bulgaria party and the Bulgarian Socialist Party, has advocated for a "coalition of peace" to end the Russia-Ukraine war. Gyurov has criticized the president's response to Russian-linked attacks on Black Sea shipping. Exit polls from Alpha Research indicated a split in voter behavior, with 74% of Progressive Bulgaria voters supporting Yotova and 39% of GERB voters supporting Gyurov.
