Alberta Prepares for Massive Referendum on Canadian Confederation

Elections Alberta is organizing a 10-question referendum on October 19, including a contentious vote on whether the province should remain part of Canada.

Alberta is preparing for a large-scale referendum on October 19, 2026, featuring 10 ballot questions on immigration, constitutional matters, and separation from Canada. The most contentious question asks voters if they wish to remain in Canada or hold a second, binding referendum on leaving Confederation. Premier Danielle Smith ordered the vote in May to resolve the issue after hundreds of thousands of citizens signed petitions on both sides.

To manage the logistics, Elections Alberta is hiring 60,000 workers and has established a 48-hour window for the final count. Officials are urging citizens to use advance polls from October 13 to 17 to avoid long lines. As of October 9, the agency had mailed 652,000 special ballots, with 303,000 already returned.

The lead-up to the vote has caused significant social polarization. Tensions led to the cancellation of a rodeo parade in Sundre following threats over a political float and a legal dispute in Taber over a pro-separation billboard. In response, Catholic bishops issued a letter on October 1 urging parishioners to maintain mutual respect and consider the impact of the vote on vulnerable populations.
