Argentine Lawmakers Scrutinize Peter Thiel's Investments in Argentina

Opposition lawmakers in Argentina held a congressional hearing to investigate tech billionaire Peter Thiel's land and oil investments under President Javier Milei's administration.

Opposition lawmakers in Argentina conducted a five-hour congressional hearing on Friday to investigate the interests of tech billionaire Peter Thiel in the country. The inquiry focused on Thiel's acquisition of a mansion in Buenos Aires and a stake in Vista, the largest oil exporter in Argentina.

Peronist opponents are using Thiel as a symbol to claim that President Javier Milei is putting the country up for sale. They specifically targeted policies that ease foreign land ownership and permit companies to be managed by artificial intelligence. The hearing follows protests at Thiel's property and occurs as Milei faces low approval ratings.

Neither Thiel nor Milei attended the hearing despite invitations. Reports indicate that Thiel views Argentina as a hedge against nuclear fallout and supports Milei's vision for AI-driven corporate governance. Following the political scrutiny, Thiel canceled a scheduled appearance at a business conference in Buenos Aires.
