South Korean General Links Russian Aid to North Korean ICBM

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Jin Yong-sung testified during a parliamentary audit on October 14, 2025, that Russia likely provided technical assistance to North Korea for the development of the Hwasong-20 intercontinental ballistic missile. North Korea recently unveiled the Hwasong-20, which it describes as its "most powerful nuclear strategic weapon system," during a military parade commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Workers' Party of Korea.

General Jin noted that the Hwasong-20's transporter erector launcher differs from the previous Hwasong-19 model, supporting suspicions of Russian aid. Addressing other threats, Jin stated that the Hwasong-11Ma supersonic missile can still be intercepted, though the accuracy of those interceptions may decrease.

To counter these developments, the South Korean military is pursuing the use of civilian satellites in addition to military reconnaissance satellites. This strategy aims to collect intelligence more frequently and in a shorter timeframe.
