Chris Bryant Orders Review of Northern Ireland Parades Commission

Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Sir Chris Bryant has ordered an independent, judge-led review into the decision-making processes of the Parades Commission. The move follows a High Court ruling in Belfast that quashed the commission's determination regarding the Drumcree parade in Portadown. Mr Justice McAlinden cited errors, shortcuts, and sloppy procedures, while the commission admitted that not all six commissioners had signed off on the determination before it was issued.

While Bryant expressed full backing for the remaining commissioners to maintain their functions during the review, the Northern Ireland Office announced a public appointments process for all six roles as current terms expire. One commissioner, Billy Gamble, resigned following the court ruling. Bryant met with the commissioners on September 2 to discuss the body's response to the judgment.

The decision has sparked political conflict. DUP leader Gavin Robinson called the support for current commissioners indefensible, arguing they have lost public confidence. UUP leader Jon Burrows welcomed the review but demanded the terms of reference be widened to examine the commission's culture and training, while calling for the final report to be published in full. TUV leader Jim Allister accused the Secretary of State of rolling over, and Sinn Féin councillor Catherine Nelson criticized the review as pandering to unionist leaders.
