Moderna Shares Hit 52-Week High on Cancer Vaccine Data
Moderna shares surged toward $187 following positive Phase 3 trial results for an mRNA-based cancer vaccine co-developed with Merck.
Shares of Moderna, Inc. reached a 52-week high of $176.86 on September 21, 2026, before climbing further to $187.20 the following day. This rally follows the August 19 announcement of positive Phase 3 INTerpath-001 trial data for Instimeran Autogene, an mRNA-based cancer vaccine co-developed with Merck. The trial, which combined the vaccine with the immunotherapy treatment Keytruda, demonstrated meaningful improvements in recurrence-free and distant metastasis-free survival for patients with Stage IIB-IV melanoma.
Investor confidence is supported by a buy rating and $180.00 price target from Argus Research, as well as quarterly revenue of $145 million reported on July 31, which exceeded analyst estimates. To capitalize on the momentum, Moderna raised $2.6 billion in capital through the issuance of convertible debt. The company also saw significant institutional investments from BlackRock Inc. and Theleme Partners LLP.
Despite the surge, analysts from J.P. Morgan and Rothschild & Co. Redburn expressed skepticism, citing uncertainty regarding nine other ongoing tumor trials and potential share dilution from the new debt. Moderna plans to present detailed melanoma data and updates on lung and pancreatic cancer therapies at the European Society for Medical Oncology Congress on October 24, followed by an investor webcast to further validate its personalized cancer treatment capabilities.
