Constitutional Expert Labels Albanese Golf Club Grant Grey Corruption
Professor Anne Twomey accused Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of political patronage after a $6 million grant was awarded to a golf club in his electorate.
Professor emerita Anne Twomey of the University of Sydney has labeled a $6 million grant awarded to the Marrickville Golf Club as "grey corruption." In a submission to a Senate inquiry, Twomey described the government's invitation-only grants scheme as a "farce" that allows local members of parliament to favor political interests over the national interest.
The grant was awarded in July 2026 to a club located in the electorate of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. It was part of a larger $560 million program used to fund 2025 election promises. Data from the Centre for Public Integrity indicates that 73% of the program's total funding was allocated to Labor-held seats.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese defended the funding, stating it was necessary to address sewage issues in the Cooks River and was part of his duty as a local member. Minister King also defended the program, asserting that the process followed established rules and that Albanese was not the final decision-maker.
