OpenAI Develops Internal Code Repository to Rival GitHub

OpenAI is developing a proprietary code repository platform as an alternative to GitHub. The initiative follows a year of service disruptions at GitHub, including a four-hour outage in early February that hampered OpenAI engineers' ability to collaborate on code.

GitHub's reliability issues stem from a software migration to Microsoft Azure that began in October 2025. This transition resulted in a 58% year-over-year increase in incidents during the first half of 2025. The project is currently in its early stages and may take several months to complete.

While the tool may remain for internal use, OpenAI employees have discussed selling access to customers by bundling the platform with Codex coding agents. Such a move would place OpenAI in direct competition with Microsoft, which owns GitHub and maintains a significant investment in OpenAI.
