Qualcomm and Arm Await Verdict in Breach of Contract Suit

Qualcomm and Arm Holdings are awaiting a jury verdict in a federal lawsuit over licensing breaches and alleged business sabotage.

A federal jury in Wilmington, Delaware, is deliberating on a contract breach lawsuit filed by Qualcomm against Arm Holdings. Qualcomm alleges that Arm breached licensing agreements by withholding essential software patches and tools and violated a pricing agreement. The plaintiff further claims that Arm intentionally sabotaged its business relationship with Meta Platforms by leaking a letter to Bloomberg in 2024 that falsely alleged Qualcomm was in breach of its license.

Arm Holdings denies these claims, arguing that Qualcomm suffered no harm and is utilizing the litigation as leverage to negotiate more favorable licensing terms. This legal battle follows a 2024 case in which Arm failed to prove that Qualcomm had breached its own agreements. A separate bench trial is currently determining whether Arm is negotiating licensing terms in good faith.

The dispute is rooted in a deteriorating relationship that began after SoftBank Group Corp acquired Arm in 2016. This acquisition prompted Arm to shift its business model from a technology licensor to a chip seller, creating the friction that led to the current litigation.
