Rockstar Games Sets Grand Theft Auto VI Console Launch for November 19
Rockstar Games will launch Grand Theft Auto VI on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, skipping the PC platform at launch.
Rockstar Games has scheduled the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI for November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The title will skip the PC platform at launch, continuing a staggered release pattern previously seen with Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2.
John Ricchio, a former Rockstar producer, explained that the studio prioritizes consoles because fixed hardware specifications allow for easier optimization than the wide variety of PC configurations. Ricchio noted that expanding a game for PC is more efficient than shrinking a PC-first version to fit console constraints. Leaked ransomware data suggests additional financial motivations, indicating that consoles generate higher microtransaction revenue than PCs.
Industry veterans have weighed in on the release and its broader implications. Former PlayStation head Shawn Layden described the anticipated impact of the game as an asteroid hitting the gaming universe, though he argued that the industry must diversify its output beyond successful AAA formulas to attract non-gamers. While Take-Two Interactive has not provided a specific date for the PC version, the company has remained cagey regarding the timeline.
