Trump Administration Cuts Refugee Status Contest Window to 10 Days

The United States government reduced the timeframe for refugees to contest status termination from 30 to 10 days to mitigate potential risks.

The Government of the United States reduced the timeframe for refugees to contest the termination of their status from 30 days to 10 days. Effective Wednesday, the administration stated the policy aims to "mitigate potential risks" from individuals it claims were ineligible for refugee status, citing an "alarming erosion of the integrity" of the program during the presidency of Joe Biden.

Federal officials are currently reviewing the cases of at least 185,000 refugees admitted under the previous administration who have pending green card applications. This policy shift coincides with a broader restriction of the refugee program, which the administration has limited primarily to white South Africans, with a planned cap of 17,500 total admissions for 2027.

Refugee aid groups, including Global Refuge and HIAS, argue the 10-day window is insufficient for individuals to secure legal counsel or gather necessary documentation. They warn that these shortened deadlines could lead to deportations to dangerous home countries where refugees face torture or persecution.
