Egypt Warns of Catastrophic US-Iran Conflict Escalation

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty warned that a new round of escalation between the US and Iran would be more destructive than previous conflicts.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty warned on Saturday that a new phase of escalation between the United States and Iran risks causing unprecedented devastation and catastrophic consequences for Middle East stability. Speaking at the IISS Manama Dialogue security summit in Bahrain, Abdelatty stated that a second round of conflict would be more dangerous and destructive than previous hostilities, asserting that it "will lead to nowhere."

The warnings follow the collapse of a June interim agreement that failed to establish a lasting ceasefire or restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Tensions remain high as the United States maintains a blockade of Iranian ports. Iran has proposed reopening the waterway within seven days if the United States lifts that blockade.

Qatari mediators returned to Tehran on Friday to attempt to broker a deal, but the two nations remain divided over priorities. The United States and Iran are currently deadlocked over whether nuclear negotiations or the lifting of oil sanctions and the port blockade should take precedence.
