New Zealand Advance Voting Exceeds 2023 Turnout Figures
The Electoral Commission of New Zealand reports over 1.25 million advance votes cast for the 2026 election, surpassing previous turnout levels.
The Electoral Commission of New Zealand reports that advance voting for the 2026 general election is proceeding with high engagement, with over 1.25 million eligible voters—roughly one-third of the electorate—already casting ballots. This turnout exceeds the figures recorded at the same stage in 2023.
Activity remains high across both urban and remote regions. At The Palms Shopping Centre in Christchurch East, one of the nation's busiest sites, polling manager Jake Preston reported wait times of up to 12 minutes. To ensure accessibility in remote areas, officials established a temporary polling place in Milford Sound on October 31 for residents and tour workers. In Te Anau, seven polling places will be available for the final election day this Saturday.
Despite the high turnout, the commission faced a clerical error involving more than 6,000 residence-class visa holders who were incorrectly told they must provide immigration information before voting. Chief Executive Karl Le Quesne apologized for the mistake and confirmed that the issue has been resolved and all affected individuals have been contacted.
