France Integrates Auto Industry to Scale Military Drone Production

The French government is integrating its automotive industry with defense firms to build a scalable industrial base for military drone production. This shift, driven by the war in Ukraine and pressure from the United States, aims to replace small-scale startup production with the automation and cost discipline found in car manufacturing. A Senate committee recently described current drone stocks as insufficient, prompting the state to pursue a strategy that could reach an annual output of 60,000 units.

Specific industrial partnerships form the core of this initiative. Renault and Thales are developing the Toutatis kamikaze drone, with plans to produce 1,000 units per month starting in 2027. Additionally, Valeo is manufacturing electric motors for Harmattan AI, and Forvia is planning the production of 1,000 interceptor drones monthly. These efforts are coordinated by the defense procurement agency to leverage automotive subcontractors for high-volume designs.

To support this transition, Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu pledged 150 million euros last December to develop the sector. The government intends for these partnerships to secure national sovereignty and provide the capacity to rapidly increase production during a crisis.
