Robert Kaplan Backs Federal Reserve July Rate Pause

Robert Kaplan stated the Federal Reserve made the correct decision by maintaining interest rates in July amid conflicting inflationary and disinflationary pressures.

Former Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas President Robert Kaplan stated that the Federal Reserve made the correct decision by not raising interest rates in July. Now serving as Vice Chair at Goldman Sachs, Kaplan noted that the U.S. economy is facing opposing forces. He identified AI infrastructure builds and oil price spikes caused by the war in Iran as inflationary drivers, while AI adoption and Chinese overcapacity act as disinflationary pressures.

Kaplan described the current labor market as stable, noting that companies are neither aggressively hiring nor firing. However, he characterized the economic environment for businesses tied to the automotive and housing sectors as "somewhat sluggish."

While supporting the July pause, Kaplan expressed disagreement with a rate cut implemented in December. He suggested that the Federal Reserve should maintain an open mind regarding its policy direction for the upcoming September meeting.
