Uhuru Kenyatta Claims Raila Odinga Won 2022 Election

Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta claimed during a Jubilee Party National Executive Council meeting in Nairobi that the late Raila Odinga actually won the 2022 General Election. Kenyatta asserted that the outcome was altered after ballots were cast, arguing that the Azimio la Umoja–One Kenya Coalition's strong performance in parliamentary and gubernatorial races contradicted the presidential result. This marks the first time Kenyatta has publicly challenged the victory of President William Ruto.

During the same meeting, Kenyatta stepped down as leader of the Jubilee Party to become a senior advisor, following a High Court ruling that restricts retired presidents from holding formal party leadership. He handed the leadership to former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and endorsed him for the 2027 general election.

President William Ruto and his allies dismissed the claims, with United Democratic Alliance leaders noting that the Supreme Court upheld the original victory. Oburu Oginga, leader of the Orange Democratic Movement, demanded transparency from Kenyatta, questioning why his administration facilitated the transfer of power if he believed the results were fraudulent. Additionally, Omondi Oginga, brother of the late Raila Odinga, criticized Kenyatta for revisiting the dispute and urged him to allow the family to mourn Odinga, who died in October 2025.
