Defense Department Signs Eight AI Deals to End Anthropic Reliance

The United States Department of Defense announced a strategic transformation to establish the U.S. military as an AI-first fighting force through expanded contracts with eight technology companies. The agreements include Amazon Web Services, Google, Microsoft, Nvidia, OpenAI, Reflection, Oracle, and SpaceX. These partners will integrate generative and agentic AI into the department's Impact Level 6 and Impact Level 7 classified networks via the GenAI.mil platform to streamline data synthesis and augment warfighter decision-making.

This diversification follows a public rift with Anthropic, the former sole provider of AI models for classified networks. The administration designated Anthropic a supply-chain risk after the company refused terms allowing the military to use its technology for any lawful purpose, specifically citing concerns over autonomous weapons and mass surveillance. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth dismissed Anthropic's leadership as ideological lunatics, though a federal judge blocked the government's effort to blacklist the company entirely. Despite the legal battle, the government is drafting policies to permit the use of Anthropic's Mythos cybersecurity tool.

Undersecretary of Defense Emil Michael stated the department would no longer be single-threaded with any one vendor to avoid lock-in and maintain an operational edge. Parallel to these efforts, the U.S. Navy awarded a $100 million contract to Domino Data Lab to enhance AI-driven mine detection using underwater drones in the Strait of Hormuz.
