ChangXin Memory Mass Produces LPDDR6 Chips for Xiaomi
ChangXin Memory Technologies has begun mass production of LPDDR6 memory chips to supply Xiaomi's upcoming 18 Fold foldable smartphone.
ChangXin Memory Technologies has started mass production of LPDDR6 memory chips, which will debut in Xiaomi's 18 Fold foldable phone scheduled for September release. The chips are designed to integrate with Xiaomi's in-house 3-nanometre Xring O3 processor. This development marks a significant shift in the DRAM industry, as the Chinese producer reached mass production of the new standard roughly at the same time as global leaders, narrowing a historical technology gap.
The LPDDR6 chips introduce technical upgrades over the previous LPDDR5 standard, including PAM3 signaling, a data transfer rate of 43.2 GT/s, and a reduced I/O width of 24 bits. This follows a rapid production cycle, as the company mass-produced LPDDR5 less than a year ago. However, because current implementation is limited to a single smartphone model, questions remain regarding the company's ability to achieve the yields and volumes required for the broader global market.
Financially, the Hefei-based company reported a sharp turnaround to profit in the first half of the year, with revenue increasing 874% to 150.3 billion yuan. In a separate legal matter, the company has filed a lawsuit against the United States Department of Defense over its inclusion on a list of companies allegedly aiding the Chinese military.
