Tesco Launches AI Meal Planner as Sainsbury's Debuts SmartLists
Tesco is rolling out an AI-powered meal planning assistant to customers following a large-scale employee trial and a new partnership with Mistral.
Tesco has begun rolling out an AI-powered meal planning assistant to customers after a trial involving approximately 280,000 employees. Integrated into the Tesco app, the tool uses Clubcard purchase history to provide personalized recipe ideas, suggest meals based on cost or cuisine, and help users utilize ingredients already in their homes.
The assistant was developed by in-house teams in collaboration with OpenAI and Tomoro AI. To expand its broader AI capabilities, the supermarket has also entered a three-year strategic partnership with the European start-up Mistral. Chief Executive Ken Murphy stated the company is making progress on AI-enabled personalisation and helping customers manage their busy lives.
Simultaneously, competitor Sainsbury's launched SmartLists. This AI feature allows customers to create shopping lists using text, voice, or photos, integrating with Nectar prices to assist with budgeting and store navigation.
