Silicon Valley Investors Clash Over Neolab AI Valuations

Venture capitalists are divided over the economic viability of research-first AI startups seeking valuations up to $50 billion.

Venture capitalists in Silicon Valley are increasingly divided over the economic viability of neolabs, which are research-first AI startups founded by former employees of Google DeepMind and OpenAI. These firms, including Safe Superintelligence, Thinking Machines Lab, and a new startup founded by Jeff Dean, are seeking valuations ranging from $32 billion to $50 billion.

Menlo Ventures partners have expressed skepticism regarding these figures, warning that the sector may be overhyped. Partner Matt Murphy cautioned against fueling the trend, stating that the opposite of what investors want to do is start a match with a bonfire.

Conversely, firms such as Radical Ventures and New Enterprise Associates remain bullish. Radical Ventures views these startups as high-risk power-law bets that could evolve into foundational companies worth hundreds of billions. New Enterprise Associates reports that top talent continues to exit incumbent firms to launch their own labs, with some billion-dollar equity rounds currently closing quickly and smoothly.
