Alibaba Qwen AI Models Reach 3 Billion Global Downloads

Alibaba Group Holding Limited developed the Qwen family of open-weight AI models, which reached over 3 billion global downloads in the past six months. This volume surpasses the download counts of major U.S. competitors, with Alphabet Inc. recording 418 million downloads and Meta Platforms Inc. recording 227 million in 2026, according to a Hugging Face Inc. report published August 14.

Alibaba has open-sourced more than 460 models, leading to the creation of over 300,000 derivative versions. The company expanded its distribution by providing Qwen to enterprise customers in Africa and Southeast Asia via its cloud platform. This growth suggests Chinese developers are closing the performance gap with closed U.S. models despite existing chip export controls.

In response to the intensifying competition for developers, Meta Platforms Inc. and Nvidia Corp. have recently released new open AI models to maintain their market position.
