Broadcom to Lend Anthropic $42 Billion for AI Infrastructure

Broadcom agreed to lend Anthropic up to $42 billion to finance massive computing capacity leases as the AI laboratory prepares for an initial public offering.

Anthropic revealed in its IPO prospectus that Broadcom has agreed to lend the company up to $42 billion to finance infrastructure spending. The financing, which may utilize convertible notes that can be turned into shares, is designed to cover roughly one-third of a $125.2 billion five-year lease commitment for tensor processing unit (TPU) computing capacity.

This arrangement will likely make Anthropic the largest compute customer for Broadcom by 2027. The deal involves a collaboration between Broadcom and Google to provide next-generation TPU capacity starting in 2027.

In its filing, Anthropic warned that Broadcom's dual role as both a hardware supplier and a financing partner creates potential conflicts of interest. The company noted these conflicts could impact its ability to manage pricing and procure the computing power necessary for its operations.
