New York Times Deploys 400 Staff for Midterm Coverage

The New York Times is deploying over 400 journalists and analysts across 30 states to cover the U.S. midterm elections.

The New York Times is deploying more than 400 journalists, editors, and data analysts across at least 30 states to cover the U.S. midterm elections. The operation includes over 100 reporters on the ground for election night and three dedicated video teams stationed in Maine, Michigan, and Texas. To maintain continuous coverage, the organization is running a 24-hour video operation across newsrooms in New York, Los Angeles, London, and Seoul.

To ensure accuracy and combat misinformation, the Visual Investigations team will monitor for AI-generated images and videos. The publication will use Associated Press data and internal web scrapers to power its results estimate, known as the Needle. Following the election, the news organization will launch Times Voter Trends to analyze voting patterns by age, race, education, and gender.

Politics editor Michael Cooper stated that the election will provide clues about the final two years of President Trump's term and the balance of power in Congress. Additionally, the election analytics team aims to use hard data to explain concepts like polling error to reduce public uneasiness regarding polls.
