Chinese Firms Launch Domestic AI Chips to Replace Nvidia

Zhonghao Xinying and Baidu are deploying homegrown AI hardware to bypass U.S. trade restrictions and reduce reliance on Nvidia GPUs.

Several Chinese technology firms are accelerating the development of domestic AI hardware to counter U.S. trade restrictions on top-end GPUs. The startup Zhonghao Xinying recently introduced the Ghana chip, a General Purpose Tensor Processing Unit (GPTPU). Founded by former Google engineer Yanggong Yifan and co-founder Zheng Hanxun, the company claims the Ghana chip is 1.5 times faster than Nvidia's 2020 A100 GPU and 25% more power-efficient. The startup asserts the chip uses entirely self-controlled intellectual property to ensure independence from Western technology licenses.

Simultaneously, Baidu is challenging Huawei for domestic market share through its subsidiary Kunlunxin. Baidu has established a five-year roadmap for its Kunlun AI chips, with the M100 and M300 scheduled for 2026 and 2027 respectively. The company is positioning itself as a full-stack provider by integrating chips with servers, data centers, and AI models. Kunlunxin has already secured domestic orders, including contracts from suppliers to China Mobile.

These developments occur as major Chinese tech giants like Alibaba and Tencent report semiconductor supply shortages. While the Ghana chip and Kunlun hardware provide domestic alternatives, they continue to trail the performance of Nvidia's latest Blackwell series. Furthermore, the industry faces manufacturing limitations at SMIC Corporation compared to global leaders like TSMC.
