Colombia Blames ELN for Cucuta Truck Bomb Near Inauguration

A truck bomb detonated next to a police station in Cucuta on August 1, 2026, wounding eight police officers and three civilians. The Colombian government attributed the attack to the National Liberation Army (ELN), the country's largest active guerrilla group. In response, Minister of National Defense Pedro Sanchez offered a reward exceeding $64,000 for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators.

Abelardo de la Espriella, the President-elect and a right-wing lawyer, condemned the bombing as a cowardly terrorist attack and stated that such violence would not intimidate the country. The blast occurred six days before his scheduled August 7 inauguration. De la Espriella has already signaled his intention to abandon the peace negotiations established by outgoing President Gustavo Petro in favor of an aggressive military strategy supported by the United States and Israel.

Due to security concerns and alleged assassination plots, De la Espriella requested to move his inauguration from the traditional site in Bogota to Cali. To secure the ceremony, the Government of Colombia is preparing a deployment of 11,000 security personnel. This escalation follows a decade-high wave of violence involving guerrillas and drug trafficking gangs, as well as political assassinations including that of senator Miguel Uribe Turbay in 2025.
