Poland Extends Border Controls With Germany and Lithuania

The Polish government extended temporary border controls with Germany and Lithuania for six months, effective Sunday and lasting until April 4, 2026. Marcin Kierwinski, the Minister of the Interior and Administration, signed the decree on Wednesday to maintain checks at 50 points on the German border and 13 on the Lithuanian border.

Following the Munich Migration Meeting, Kierwinski stated that Poland opposes European Union regulations regarding the relocation of migrants. He cited the heavy price paid for securing the bloc's external border, noting that nearly 25,000 illegal crossings from Belarus occurred this year.

Poland also recently reopened border crossings with Belarus for cargo and passengers. These crossings had been temporarily closed from September 12 to late September in response to the joint Russian-Belarusian military exercise Zapad-2025.
