India and US Reaffirm Energy Partnership at G20 Ministerial

Indian Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright reaffirmed their commitment to the US-India Energy Security Partnership during bilateral meetings in Houston. The discussions focused on clean energy, resilient infrastructure, and the power requirements for data centers, high-performance computing, and artificial intelligence.

Manohar Lal detailed India's roadmap for nuclear expansion, targeting 100 GW of atomic energy capability by 2047. This goal follows the enactment of the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Act, which permits private sector participation in the nuclear industry. Additionally, maritime data shows India has increased imports of liquefied petroleum gas and liquefied natural gas from the United States following supply disruptions in West Asia.

During the G20 Energy Abundance Ministerial and Working Group meetings, Manohar Lal advocated for secure, affordable, and reliable energy for developing economies. He highlighted that India has reached 552 GW of installed electricity generation capacity, with non-fossil fuel sources now exceeding 50 percent. He also promoted the National Critical Mineral Mission and India's goal of achieving Net Zero by 2070.

To improve infrastructure development, the minister detailed India's use of digital platforms like the National Single Window System and PM Gati Shakti to streamline regulatory approvals. He called for broader G20 cooperation in regulatory modernization and capacity building to ensure timely energy project implementation.
