Taiwan Representative Defends Stability of U.S. Policy Amid China Pressure
Alexander Yui asserts U.S. policy toward Taiwan remains unchanged while detailing increased defense spending and economic shifts away from China.
Taiwan's representative to the United States, Alexander Yui, stated that U.S. policy toward Taiwan remains unchanged despite efforts by the People's Republic of China to suggest a shift following a recent visit by Chinese leadership to Washington. Yui noted that Taiwan was absent from official meeting fact sheets, which he interpreted as a lack of consensus on the issue rather than a change in position.
Yui highlighted a significant economic pivot away from China, noting that foreign direct investment into China has fallen from 85 percent fifteen years ago to 1 percent today. He pointed to increased investment flowing into the United States, specifically citing the TSMC Phoenix project as a key example of this trend.
On security, Yui confirmed that Taiwan has received its first two F-16 V Block 70 aircraft. He announced that Taiwan is increasing defense spending to 3 percent of GDP this year, with a long-term goal of reaching 5 percent to counter high threat levels from Beijing.
