Hungarian Prime Minister Labels Russia Threat to Global Order

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has officially designated Russia as a threat to Hungary, Europe, and the global order. Detailed in a foreign policy directive published in the official gazette, the new guidelines for the 81st United Nations General Assembly condemn Russian military aggression and affirm support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.

This shift marks a significant departure from the pro-Russian policies of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Since taking office in May, Magyar has aligned Budapest with the European Union by backing the 21st package of anti-Russian sanctions, lifting a veto on a 90 billion euro loan for Kyiv, and returning seized gold and cash to Ukraine's Oschadbank. These actions helped secure the release of 16.4 billion euros in frozen EU funds. Additionally, Magyar is reviewing the Paks II nuclear power plant deal with the Russian state corporation Rosatom.

Despite these changes, Hungary continues to refuse weapon supplies to Ukraine and maintains Russian energy imports. Magyar also stated that Hungary opposes accelerated EU accession for Ukraine, conditioning support on a legally binding referendum and the closure of all 33 accession chapters over the next 10 to 15 years.

In response, Andrei Kolesnik of the Russian State Duma’s Defence Committee warned that Russian oil and gas supplies to Hungary are now in doubt. Kolesnik claimed the Hungarian government is bowing to European Union pressure to adopt a hostile stance toward Moscow.
