Jamaat-e-Islami Stages Nationwide Protests Over Fuel Prices

The political party Jamaat-e-Islami staged nationwide protests on Friday, August 7, 2026, to protest inflation, rising fuel prices, and the petroleum levy. The party reported that demonstrations and sit-ins disrupted traffic on 510 roads across 170 districts, including major cities such as Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Karachi, and Lahore.

Party chief Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman accused the Government of Pakistan of incompetence and corruption. He alleged that the government collected Rs8 trillion through the petroleum levy but failed to lower local prices despite a drop in international oil costs. Rehman demanded the abolition of the petroleum levy and the reduction of petrol prices to Rs225 per litre.

Following the Friday rallies, the party announced plans for further escalation, including a march to the Chief Minister's House in Lahore on August 9 and sit-ins outside Governor Houses across all four provinces. While the August 7 protests caused significant traffic jams at key intersections, participants eventually dispersed peacefully.
