Quebec Party Leaders Reject Alliances Ahead of October 5 Election

Quebec's provincial election campaign has entered its final stretch with voters scheduled to go to the polls on October 5. While the Parti Québécois currently leads in polling, aggregators suggest a minority government remains the most likely outcome. In response, leaders from the major parties have explicitly ruled out forming governing alliances.

Parti Québécois leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon and Coalition Avenir Québec leader Christine Fréchette both stated that partnerships with other parties are out of the question. Liberal leader Charles Milliard similarly distanced himself from rivals, while Conservative leader Éric Duhaime ruled out a formal coalition but argued that parties must remain open to collaboration to avoid a dysfunctional legislature.

Campaign platforms have diverged on key social and economic issues. The Quebec Conservative Party proposed a provincial constitution and a shield law against federal intrusions, while Québec solidaire pledged to end blind bidding in home purchases and cut university tuition by 50% toward a goal of free education. The Quebec Liberal Party focused on infrastructure, promising to widen Highway 30 on Montreal's South Shore.

Ideological clashes have intensified as Christine Fréchette and Ruba Ghazal accused the Parti Québécois and Conservatives of aligning on economic austerity. Meanwhile, Fréchette has attempted to distance her party from the record of former premier François Legault to regain momentum. Party leaders are now preparing for a final televised Radio-Canada debate in Montreal on September 24.
