Christine Wormuth Warns of New Global Nuclear Arms Race

During the Munich Security Conference, Christine Wormuth, CEO of the Nuclear Threat Initiative and former Army secretary, warned that the world has entered a perilous new era. She cautioned that the global environment is now dangerous following the expiration of the New START treaty, which leaves the United States and Russia without strategic nuclear weapon limits for the first time since 1972.

Wormuth characterized the U.S. decision not to extend the treaty as a "missed opportunity," although she noted that the United States and Russia recently held discussions in Abu Dhabi regarding continued limits. She specifically highlighted the rapid expansion of China's nuclear arsenal, with projections indicating the country could possess 1,000 weapons by 2030.

To maintain stability, Wormuth urged the U.S. administration to provide stronger reassurances to European allies regarding the American nuclear umbrella. She argued that such guarantees are necessary to prevent friendly proliferation in nations such as Germany and Poland.
