UK Faces Water Crisis Amid Lack of Reservoir Investment

The United Kingdom is experiencing a critical water-storage shortage and summer drought despite record winter rainfall due to a decades-long failure to build new reservoirs.

The Government of the United Kingdom is facing a critical shortage of water-storage capacity that critics have characterized as a national security issue. Despite experiencing one of the wettest winters on record, England entered a drought in the summer of 2026, exposing a systemic failure to capture and store excess rainfall for later use.

No new reservoirs have been constructed in the UK since 1992. While the government has announced plans to fast-track the construction of nine reservoirs by 2050, critics argue the timeline is insufficient, as only one is expected to be operational within the next decade. Bureaucratic hurdles are further hindering the implementation of water storage at the farm level.

In response to the shortage, some utility providers have introduced surge pricing to manage demand. Anglian Water implemented a summer tariff in Norwich that is approximately 2.5 times higher than standard winter rates.
